ECSTASY AS FOUNDATION EMPOWERS WOMEN IN ONDO STATE
Joy filled the air at the recently held Dr Rhoda Makinde Initiative World?Dromi World) maiden women summit, where over 600 women were empowered by the non governmental organisation.
On January 30, 2020, the day the event was held, as early as 10am, Oba Adesanoye Civic Center, where the event took place was filled to the brim by who-is-who in Ondo kingdom. Women from all walks of life were also there awaiting goodies the summit has in stock for them irrespective of their political affiliations.
The arrival of Dromi Founder, Dr Rhoda Makinde, and her husband, Hon. Abiola Makinde, who at present represents the people of Ondo East/West Federal Constituency at the Green Chamber, further lit the atmosphere inside the well decorated hall.
In her welcome speech, the Director of Programmes for Dromi, Mrs. Modupe Oluwaronbi, expressed delight on heights attained so far by Dromi, noting that the initiative has successfully built a society, totally free of discrimination against women.
Eulogising Dr Rhoda and her supporting husband, Oluwaronbi described them as pace-setters who have carved a niche in putting smiles on the faces of downtrodden in the society.
She however encouraged the beneficiaries to use the opportunities judiciously, having in mind that they need to also be a source of help to others.
Narrating how she started a mini-business as an undergraduate with N10,000 gifted her by her uncle, Dr. Rhoda Makinde said though she was not born with silver spoon, but with determination, she was able to surmount obstacles to her success in life.
According to her, "Dromi was created to be a vehicle for achieving sustainable development through deliberate actions that promote the welfare of women, youths and children by giving them equal access to opportunites.
"We observed the link between micro businesses and women self empowerment in Nigeria and Ondo State in particular and we realised that women need a brigde builder that will empower them to achieve the best for themselves, family and society.
"In achieving self sustainability for women, several free skills acquisition trainings have been organised in different states where they were trained in skills such as Gele Tying, Events Halls Decoration, Beauty Makeover, Snacks and Small Chops, Production of Liquid Soap, Bag and Auto-Cap making and so on.
"Dromi programmes help to enhance our women in skills acquisition, we taught our women to become their own agents of positive change, to ensure that they discovered themselves, regain their senses and pride, so as to say no to domestic violence.
"At the end of each training, Certificates of Participation were awarded to the participants with working instruments such as Gas cylinders, blenders, makeup kits, frying pans, meat mincer machine, start-up cash and many more.
"We are not lagging behind in putting smiles on the faces of aged women that we adjudged as Senior Citizens. Our interest-free cooperative scheme is a succour to market women. Dromi Education Intervention is giving hope to the hopeless.
"As we are promising not to relent in our efforts in transforming the destinies of women, I wish to inform the beneficiaries of our different empowerments to reciprocate this gesture by empowering other women around them to make life better for all"
In his goodwill message, Hon. Dr. Abiola Makinde, urged men to always encourage and empower their wives. Having lost his father about 24 years ago, the lawmaker said he knew the effects of poverty, hence, the tremendous support giving to his wife in her quest to alleviate poverty and economically empower women in the society.
During the summit, three invited guest speakers spoke on different topics like how to be a virtuous woman, handling of menopause period in women and how to be a good manager of money in the family.
Part of side attractions at the summit were fashion parade from different fashion institutes, playlet by Dromi drama group, entertainment by different tribes' dancing troupes and so on.
To cap the summit up, the foundation dolled out sewing machines, grinding machines, dryers, cake mixers and cash gifts to different categories of women. The beneficiaries were full of praises on Dromi World for the gesture.
